A three-day Lake District loop — miles, stops, and the right car

18 December 2025 · 9 min read

Day one: collect from Manchester Airport, run the M6 to Windermere, and stay lakeside. A Golf or 530i is ideal — tight parking in villages rewards a smaller footprint unless you need boot space for hiking gear.

Day two: Ambleside → Grasmere → Honister Pass. The pass is narrow and blind in places; take the Sports category only if you are confident on single-track with pull-ins. Morning light on Buttermere is worth an early alarm.

Day three: Keswick and the A66 eastbound back toward Manchester. Stop at Rheged for coffee and charge if you are in an EV — CCS bays are behind the main building.

Total distance sits around 220 miles plus detours. Fuel or charge budget: roughly £45–£90 depending on category. Book winter tyres November–March if snow is forecast — we fit them on select crossovers at EDI and MAN.

This route stays outside London charging zones. You will still pay for Lake District parking — carry coins for the older pay-and-display machines that have not caught up with apps yet.
